All-American Katy Clements, veteran Don Houlton welcomed to the program

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – First-year Central Michigan gymnastics coach Christine MacDonald has named Don Houlton and Katy Clements to assistant-coaching posts, completing her staff for the 2020 season.
 
Clements is a familiar name to CMU gymnastics, having earned All-America honors in 2018 to cap a standout career in maroon and gold. Houlton is a veteran with more 30 years of coaching and administrative experience.
 
"Both Don and Katy bring passion and energy to the gym and they both reflect the standards that are consistent with the desired direction of our program," said MacDonald, who former Chippewa gymnast and longtime assistant in the program who was named in May to head the storied program. "The interview process required a great deal of patience in selecting the right individuals that would complement each other in terms of technical skills, recruiting experience, and the ability to foster a culture of competing in a positive and cohesive team environment."

Clements, a native of Gainesville, Ga., earned four letters and become one of the program's most-decorated gymnasts. She was an NCAA Regional champion and a Mid-American Conference champion on the balance beam, a three-time All-MAC honoree, a two-time team Most Valuable Performer and in 2018 was an NCAA Woman Athlete of the Year Award nominee.
 
She earned a slew of other athletic and academic awards throughout her career at CMU. She earned a bachelor's degree with a major in journalism in 2018.
 
"Katy has grown up in the CMU gymnastics program, going from walk-on to balance beam All-American in her time as a Chippewa," MacDonald said. "She has demonstrated tremendous dedication to this program and to Central Michigan University for the past six years.

"Her work ethic and attention to detail demonstrate the commitment to excellence that we want as a trademark of CMU gymnastics. Katy will continue to be a great example of what Chippewa gymnasts are capable of accomplishing, and she will be an exceptional mentor and guide to our team."
 
Houlton served from 2011-19 as an assistant coach with IGI Gymnastics in Westmont, Ill. Before that, he was the gymnastics program director at Lake Owen Camp in Cable, Wis. and has served as an assistant coach at Arkansas, California and Yale. He was the owner/head coach of Nebraska Gold Gymnastics in Omaha from 1993-2008 and before that served as the gym's director/head coach for six years.
 
Houlton has served in several administrative capacities with USA Gymnastics and holds many certifications from the organization. He holds a bachelor's degree from Nebraska-Omaha.

"Don will be a great addition to the CMU Gymnastics coaching staff," MacDonald said. "He brings a wealth of coaching experience both collegiately and in the private club sector, and he is exceptionally passionate about our sport. I believe his club experience will be of great value as we continue to build a strong pipeline and recruiting presence not only in our region, but nationally."
